WORLD INFO

EARTH

Earth is fairly normal and comparable to the real Earth. However, due to the connection with Terra, magic can leak in through small rifts in the ‘veil’ between the two worlds, and cause strange things to happen, as well as allow humans to ‘fall’ into Terra. Most unexplainable disappearances is because of this, and most stories of magic and folklore are a result of creatures from Terra ‘falling’ into Earth, or humans who learned how to use the energy that slowly leaked in from Terra. However, the veil between the two worlds is malleable and at least somewhat impacted by human faith. With the rise of science and technology, belief in the supernatural and faith subsided, causing rips and tears in the veil to become less and less, resulting in a sort of ‘closed box’ around the Earth.

TERRA

A world that exists in the same space as Earth. Rather than a planet, it’s more akin to a ‘plane’. Geography is varied and numerous monster species exist, with multiple kingdoms run by them within the world. Numerous human settlements also exist, formed from the humans who fell through the veil between worlds. Some even interbred with the monsters in the world, since any monster with human intelligence and sentience is capable of using Glamour to take on a more human form, which is commonly done when dealing with humans. Monsters from Terra can enter Earth via tears and rifts, however the lack of magic on Earth forces them into their Glamour form unless their true form is especially human-like already, or they are overwhelmingly powerful.

ELYSIUM AND INFERNO

The world of ‘angels’ and ‘demons’ respectively. Although they exist ‘next’ to Terra and Earth, they are not directly connected and residents of either world cannot enter easily. It requires an especially large amount of power for any of them to breach into Terra or Earth. Both groups have their own machinations for Terra and Earth if they had full access to them, but without any realistic way to do so, both have settled for waging proxy war in both realms by influencing or backing residents. Although Terra has ‘angels’ and ‘demons’ as well, these are simply monsters whose ancestry at one point crossed with angels and demons, rather than being true examples of the beings, who are incredibly powerful and often terrifying simply to look at.

HUMANS AND MAGIC

Terra is a realm of magic, and magic has strange effects on humans. It often mutates their physical appearance and imbues them with abilities. The longer the exposure to magic, the more severe the mutation and the more powerful the abilities, although some react more strongly than others. As a result, most humans in Terra look different from humans from Earth, having animal attributes, or strangely colored skin or hair, or even resembling elves.

In addition to wielding magic as a mage, humans may develop special abilities due to continued exposure to magic. The types of abilities humans can develop through magic fit broadly into three categories, although hybrids of the three types do exist.

PHYSICAL-TYPE

The least-common type, this includes anyone who undergoes severe physical changes or simply develops enhanced physical abilities. These might include the simple super speed or super strength, super durability, actual hardened or steel-like flesh, horns or claws, etc.

EMITTER-TYPE

More common is this type, which allows an individual to release or ‘emit’ some sort of energy. Throwing fire, controlling ice or electricity, producing light or manipulating darkness. Many things which mages can do fall under this category if the individual is able to do it naturally.

PASSIVE-TYPE

Special cases, who develop abilities which aren’t immediately obvious and don’t involve any presence in the physical world. Enhanced intelligence, inherent understand of technology just by looking at it, having a calming, peaceful aura, possessing passive psychic abilities such as ESP or Telepathy.

MAJOR ENTITIES

THE DEADLIGHTS

An entity beyond the scope of the physical. Only able to enter Earth through a ‘crack’ in reality, it possesses powers that overwhelm even the most powerful of magicks. Although it possesses a consciousness, it is above true comprehension by physical beings, whom it refers to as ‘merely three-dimensional.’. It’s goal is purely that of chaos, desiring the ability to use it’s full powers while in reality and play dice with matte, having never encountered an actual, physical world before. It first entered Earth thousands of years ago, and was forced back out by King Solomon, who patched the ‘crack’ it was able to enter through. Although it’s the closest thing to the omniscient and all-powerful interpretation of a God, it cannot use all of it’s powers while only interacting with Earth through the crack. It is capable of influencing and manipulating others, able to outright mentally dominate the more suggestible. It can take physical form but is unharmed by the destruction of this form, and can ‘nudge’ reality in certain directions if so chooses, essentially manipulating probability in it’s own favor.

VOID

An entity formed from the negative emotions of Humanity It’s goal is purely the nullification of free will and any consciousness, believing that to be the cause of it’s existence, and that it is doing humanity a service by removing these barriers to what it considers peace and tranquility. It possesses no physical form, and it’s origins rooted in the human subconscious, can never truly be defeated, only halted temporarily. It possesses the ability to manipulate others and if an individual comes into contact with it’s ‘shroud’, it can steal their will itself.

THE RAINBOW BIRD

A deity from Terra. Completely benevolent, it’s goal is to help and protect the residents of both worlds, although due to Earth becoming somewhat of a closed box, it’s ability to materialize on Earth had been lost. Rather than directly interfering however, it chooses residents from either world to be it’s Avatars and help deal with any threats that may come about, empowering them and offering them even more power should the situation be dire. Akin to a creator god, it can even overpower death itself in some cases. Previously materialized on Earth at some points in Earth’s history, most notably inspiring the mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl

THE DARK GODS

Five Deities from Terra, sealed in the soil of the realm itself by the Rainbow Bird. Their goal is domination of Terra (and Earth, once they became aware of it’s existence.). After their initial battle where they were first sealed they lost their physical forms, having to wait until individuals compatible with them were born, and seeking to possess them, manipulating them into helping them regain their physical form. Their Chosen cannot be possessed until they are on the boundary of life and death, and the presence of the Dark God within them sustains them and lets them remain alive even past the point they should have died. Despite this cycle having repeated a number of times, they have been defeated by the Rainbow Bird and his Avatars each time.

Major Events

The Veil is ripped

Thanks to a Japanese zaibatsu known as Apsethus investigating the supernatural in the late 90s, the veil between Earth and Terra is weakened in the general Tokyo area. Magic begins slowly seeping in, creating a number of supernatural occurrences. Some Tokyo schools begin secret ‘occult clubs’ backed by the zaibatsu, to investigate these occurrences. Their true purpose is to use what happens to the students for data gathering purposes. As time went on, the veil got weaker, with the occurrences becoming significant enough for normal people to notice in the 2010s.

The Deadlights

After thousands of years, the cracks on the patch first put in place by King Soloman weakens, allowing the Deadlights to re-enter reality. The entity focuses on Tokyo, with new magic in the air giving it a chance to break the crack wider and allow it’s full capacity into physical space. Manipulating students and other young people all over Tokyo it created a secret society devoted to worshipping it with the goal of aiding it. The society was led by one of the upper members of the Apsethus zaibatsu in secret, the man completely under the sway of the Deadlights. Eventually the society was defeated by students who resisted the control of the Deadlights and one of them, a descendant of Solomon himself, was able to re-seal the crack.

The Dark King Solomon

Months after the defeat of The Deadlights, the young descendant of Solomon began to have strange dreams. Such dreams were caused by the spirit of another descendant who had sought to use the power their bloodline had for his personal gain. Possessing the current descendant in a moment of personal weakness, he began his plan; to complete a spell the original King Solomon had began developing but never completed. The spell allowed the wielder to fuse anything together, even the abstract. Solomon himself had planned to use the spell to bind the Deadlights to a physical form to allow it’s destruction, but the Dark King Solomon’s plan was to fuse Terra, Earth, Elysium, and Inferno and rule over them himself.

Siphoning life force from numerous victims, leaving them near-death and catatonic, the Dark King completed the spell, but was foiled before he could use it, once again by numerous persons of interest around Tokyo. His spirit was banished from the current descendant and forcibly passed on.

Void

The aftermath of Dark King Solomon’s plan had left Tokyo a swirling bundle of negative emotions. These emotions allowed Void to awaken and empowered it to make an attempt to enthrall humanity. Enthralling another executive of the Apsethus zaibatsu, it desired to take control of an experiment the secret organization was attempting. This would have allowed it to create an artificial eclipse, darkening the entire planet and making all of humanity vulnerable to it’s control. It was foiled by Solomon’s descendant and his companions, who used the fusion spell to temporarily bind it to the physical plane, allowing it to be struck down and temporarily defeated.

At this point in the timeline Yuri moves to Tokyo

The Veil is blown open

Months later, the Apsethus zaibatsu began their next plan - to outright rip apart the veil between worlds. To do this required a ritual that involved the sacrificial murder of numerous individuals that met specific conditions to create a sort of ‘magic bomb’. The zaibatsu enlisted help of many gang leaders and other thugs in the area, empowering them with concentrated doses of magic to grant them special abilities, using them to run interference so their plan could go off without incident.

In the end their plan was partially successful, however a last moment interference on part of the individuals investigating the murder caused the bomb to lose a significant amount of power, only allowing it to destroy the veil in the Tokyo area where it was already weakened. However, the members of the Apsethus zaibatsu escaped without retribution.

The Generation Next Tournament

Shortly after the tearing open of the Veil, all reflective surfaces in Tokyo were hijacked by a mysterious philanthropist named John Maverick. He announced a tournament to be held between all empowered individuals in the city, with the reward for victory being anything he could grant.

Battles were held throughout Tokyo, combatants using special bracelets issued by the tournament organizers to seal combatants who approached one another in a small ‘isolated space’ where they could fight without destroying the city or harming bystanders. Victory was achieved by disabling the opponent or getting them to surrender. Each victory against an opponent won a part of a ‘data pack’ that contained the location of the finals and each loss resulted in the loss of a part. Losing all parts resulted in elimination.

The finals of the tournament were held on an aircraft carrier in Tokyo Bay, however before the final round, Maverick revealed his true intentions; the entire tournament had been to analyze the participants and develop special military hardware using the data, as well as to eliminate as many empowered individuals as possible. Despite donning a heavy duty powered armor built to the specifications of the data gathered, a collaboration between several of the finalists was about to destroy the suit. Maverick then initiated the carrier’s self destruct sequence, but everyone but him was able to escape before detonation.

Archdemons and other things

By this time all the rancor in Tokyo had attracted the attention of some of the demons of Inferno, most notable an Arch-Demoness who intended to use the unique case of the city to allow herself to fully materialize on Earth.

Using minor demonic agents she had managed to get onto Earth centuries ago, she enthralled numerous humans who had some degree of demonic blood in them to do her bidding, having them collect the reagents necessary for the demonic gate that would allow her through.

In the end the spell was cast, her tower manifesting in the center of Tokyo and an army of demons pouring out from within. However, thanks to help from the King of the Azure Kingdom of Terra, the demoness was literally hammered back down into Inferno before she could access the full extent of her powers, and the majority of her demon forces which had made into Earth were incinerated. The few remaining surrendered, and some peacefully integrated into human society.

The Dark Gods

Peace wouldn’t last very long, as almost immediately the planets aligned, with four ‘compatible’ individuals appearing in Tokyo, offering a chance for the Dark Gods of Terra to escape their bindings and possess them. At the current time, the only Avatar of the Rainbow Bird was a single human, and had left for Terra to deal with a (manufactured) crisis.

Trying to take initiative, his students sought to eliminate the four they were aware of who would be vessels for the Dark Gods, but their attempts to eliminate them only played into the hands of the Dark Gods, causing the state between life and death that allowed them to be possessed.

Being mentally influenced and controlled by the Dark Gods, the four were each met by the fifth, who claimed to have been with his own Dark God for decades and offered to lead them ‘in revenge’. The myriad of negative emotions and clouded judgments caused the four to agree and they sought to sacrifice the majority of the population of Tokyo to re-energize the still weakened Dark Gods and remake the world that they believed had betrayed them. Despite opposition from numerous people in the city, the possessed vessels proved too powerful and were able to overcome any opposition, successfully sacrificing most of Tokyo and wreaking massive destruction to the urban landscape.

However, in the end the ‘leader’ of the five revealed his true intentions were to siphon the powers of all five revived gods for himself and did so, empowering himself to such a degree that even direct opposition from nearly every source was easily overwhelmed by the sheer power he possessed at the time. It was only due to the sudden and timely return of the Rainbow Bird’s Avatar that he was defeated. The Rainbow Bird then used the opportunity to purify the completely depowered Dark Gods, leaving the vessels alive and giving them the duty to raise the powerless, child-like deities. His powers also restored everyone who had been sacrificed, leaving them with no memories of the ordeal. The Rainbow Bird’s current Avatar then pointed out that this wouldn’t have happened had their been more Avatar, and decided to retire from his position, the benevolent deity giving it’s power among five individuals in Tokyo.

The Power of Belief

As the Apsethus zaibatsu continued their experiments, one of their researchers learned of the history of magic and became fascinated. Specifically, with the power of human belief and how the lack of belief had ‘sealed’ the weak spots in the veil between worlds, causing an end to the age of magic and fantasy on Earth.

His resolved to see just how powerful belief was. Could belief create a new being? A fully conscious being? Could it create life? A god?

Recruiting the aid of the remnants of one of the enhanced street gangs the zaibatsu had previously used to run interference, he forced shops all over the city to begin carrying small models of various design. He also used the gangs to spread rumors throughout the city; praying to these idols and making offers would make small wishes come true.

The results were astouding. As if created from the either, the beings portrayed by the figures began to appear. Some were violent, some weren’t, some happily became part of the strange society currently existing in Tokyo. The researcher was thrilled.

However, the leader of the gang he had asked for help wasn’t. He wanted more than the monetary reimbursement the researcher was giving him, so he created a series of models himself, and planted them. The resulting being bound to him, giving him enormous power that almost immediately gave him a God Complex. However, his power wasn’t as large as he thought, as he was almost immediately defeated by one of the avatars of the Rainbow Bird. The backlash of having this power stripped from him was too much for his body to bear however, and he dissolved into nothingness.
